Gang Scheduling with a Queue for Large Jobs
نویسندگان
چکیده
Applying gang scheduling can alleviate the blockade problem caused by exclusively space-sharing scheduling. To simply allow jobs to run simultaneously on the same processors as in conventional gang scheduling, however, may introduce a large number of time slots in the system. In consequence the cost of context switches will be greatly increased, and each running job can only obtain a small portion of resources including memory space and processor utilisation and so no jobs can nish their computations quickly. Therefore, the number of jobs allowed to run in the system should be limited. In this paper we present some experimental results to show that by limiting real large jobs timesharing the same processors and applying the back lling technique we can greatly reduce the average number of time slots in the system and signi cantly improve the performance of both small and large jobs.

A Multiprocessor System with Non-Preemptive Earliest-Deadline-First Scheduling Policy: A Performability Study
This paper introduces an analytical method for approximating the performability of a firm realtime system modeled by a multi-server queue. The service discipline in the queue is earliestdeadline- first (EDF), which is an optimal scheduling algorithm. Real-time jobs with exponentially distributed relative deadlines arrive according to a Poisson process. All jobs have deadlines until the end of s...
متن کاملScheduling Gangs in a Distributed System
In this paper we study the performance of parallel job scheduling in a distributed system. A special type of scheduling called gang scheduling is considered. In gang scheduling jobs consist of a number of interacting tasks, which are scheduled to run simultaneously on distinct processors. Two gang scheduling policies are used to schedule parallel jobs for two different types of job parallelism....
متن کاملA Mathematical Analysis on Linkage of a Network of Queues with Two Machines in a Flow Shop including Transportation Time
This paper represents linkage network of queues consisting of biserial and parallel servers linked to a common server in series with a flowshop scheduling system consisting of two machines. The significant transportation time of the jobs from one machine to another is also considered. Further, the completion time of jobs/customers (waiting time + service time) in the queue network is the set...
متن کاملPerformance Analysis of Gang Scheduling in a Partitionable Parallel System
This paper addresses performance issues associated with job scheduling in a partitionable parallel system. Jobs consist of parallel tasks scheduled to execute concurrently on processor partitions, where each task starts at the same time and computes at the same pace. The performance of different scheduling schemes is compared over various workloads. Various performance metrics are examined. The...
متن کاملSolving the Problem of Scheduling Unrelated Parallel Machines with Limited Access to Jobs
Nowadays, by successful application of on time production concept in other concepts like production management and storage, the need to complete the processing of jobs in their delivery time is considered a key issue in industrial environments. Unrelated parallel machines scheduling is a general mood of classic problems of parallel machines. In some of the applications of unrelated parallel mac...
